Building a Mongolian Yurt

The Yurt

In the Ian's Realm Saga, the primary home for both the Kaemperns and the Meneks is the yurt. In researching for the story, I was invited to help construct an actual authentic Mongolian yurt that Crystal Lin Smithwick and Robert Odekirk own. You'll see the construction of this yurt in the slideshow below.

You see here a traditional all hand made structure designed after the original Mongolian Yurt.

And Crystal in her traditional costume.

This is a yurt in its high plains setting, covered with felt, a product made from wool. The yurt is a shelter made by the nomadic people of central Asia and has been their abode for thousands of years.
