Making the Best of Things

Riding home today at dusk, the sky was gold and pink and dappled with puffs of silver clouds. The air was fresh and warm, the trees gilded with autumn. I thought about how beautiful the world can be when we are living in harmony with nature the way we should.

The presidential debates were on tonight. Coming home from fencing, I am glad I did not have my TV on. I’ve heard the rhetoric. There is nothing new. Issues were discussed that have been discussed for the last year and a half. No ones views have changed, the candidates just finally came together face to face.

The sunset was much more beautiful.

I am well aware that there is not a single candidate who will save us, nor is there one who offers us anything more than what we already have.

I thought about the people who have existed before me, or who even now live under an oppressive government. They are governed with a hand more heavy than they deserve. Maybe it’s in Russia, or Afghanistan, or China.

To survive they look at the same sky, breathe the same fresh air, enjoy those things that nature gave us. That is what will save us no matter what mankind does. Our political future does not look good. I have no hope in it. I have hope in the gentle things in life.
